You Are Here…Today

I found myself quiet this morning…which isn’t always an easy thing to pull off on a Thursday…and in that quiet and still place, I became lost in a thought.  The thought itself was simple enough; life is a gift

However, the more I thought about it, the more I became inspired to reflect on an extraordinary benfit to this great gift from God.  And that is, the unique opportunity each of us has, every single day, and for as long as we draw breath, to invent and reinvent.  And really what I mean is, the chance to reinvent ourselves.

startEach and every new day provides for all of us an amazing opportunity to start, to do, to achieve, and to truly live.

If you don’t like the place where you find yourself today, the present moment is where you can begin to change it.

In the present is where the magic happens.  The NOW is where you can start to form a new habit, or take even the smallest step toward somethign bigger, brighter, and bolder.

It seems to me that life is far too short for any of us to chance the misery or discomfort we may find ourslves in today, as being the pieces which make up the legacy we leave behind.

With no promise of tomorrow, and no way to change the past, how could any of us not seize the moment and the day to live with all of the passion and puspose we were intended to live it with?  How could we not use the God-given talents and abilities, tools and strengths to give back in the same amazingly loving and overly-generous manner to which we were given this gift of life?

You might answer, “well, I’m in a very difficult place right now and starting anything seems impossible”.

I will boldy tell you, even at the risk of pissing you off a little, that you’re not in any situation which hasn’t been experienced at some level by many before you, and which will be experienced by many after you.  That doesn’t make it any easier, I know.  But it moves your circumstance from the realm of impossible to deal with, because there have been many of those aforementioned people who have taken themselves to better places, higher levels, and who could at a different point in time confidently proclaim, “that may be who I was, but this is who I am!”

Here’s a poem by Berton Braley that I wanted to share with you, because it speaks to the concept of starting from wherever you are, and regardless of what you have done or not done to get to that point.  Simple in it’s expression, classic in it’s delivery.  My hope, prayer, and desire, is that it will move you to a place of taking action.  You are alive.  Make sure you take full advantage of that, every single chance you get…

Start Where You Stand

Start where you stand and never mind the past,

The past won’t help you in beginning new,

If you have left it all behind at last,

Why, that’s enough, you’re done with it, you’re through.

This is another chapter in the book,

This is another race that you have planned,

Don’t give the vanished days a backward look,

Start where you stand.

The world won’t care about your old defeats,

If you can start anew and win success,

The future is your time and time is fleet,

And there is much of work and strain and stress;

forget the buried woes and dead despaors,

Here is a brand new trial right at hand,

The future is for him who does and dares,

Start where you stand.

Old failures will not hault, old triumphs aid,

Today’s the thing tomorrow soon will be,

Get in the fight and face it unafraid,

And leave the past to ancient history.

What has been, has been; yesterday is dead,

And by it you are neither blessed nor banned,

Take courage man, be brave and drive ahead,

Start where you stand.
