I ran across a great poem tonight that was written by a guy named Berton Braley.
The poem is all about will power, but I also think it speaks to the power of the focused and persistent human spirit.
There is no doubt in my mind that if any of us want something bad enough, we can have it. Of course if we never do anything about our desire, we will simply go on wanting. It is, after all, by taking action that we start to achieve all that we desire in life.
The poem was just such a great reminder to me that wanting something is not enough. You can sit around and want and want and want.
However, persistence is always rewarded.
The winners in life, and by that I mean those who achieve and don’t just daydream about success, are the ones who have learned to take action and continue pursuing their goal without any thought of not achieving it.
Read the poem and see what you think. Better yet, see what it inspires you to do!
The Will To Win
If you want a thing bad enough
To go out and fight for it,
Work day and night for it,
Give up your time and your peace and
your sleep for it
If only desire of it
Makes you quite mad enough
Never to tire of it,
Makes you hold all other things tawdry
and cheap for it
If life seems all empty and useless without it
And all that you scheme and you dream is about it,
If gladly you’ll sweat for it,
Fret for it, Plan for it,
Lose all your terror of God or man for it,
If you’ll simply go after that thing that you want,
With all your capacity,
Strength and sagacity,
Faith, hope and confidence, stern pertinacity,
If neither cold poverty, famished and gaunt,
Nor sickness nor pain,
Of body or brain
Can turn you away from the thing that you want,
If dogged and grim you beseige and beset it,
You’ll get it!
