I have been fortunate enough to talk with many successful people in my life so far and I have had the chance to ask them how they achieved the biggest goals in their own lives. In fact, it has been a quest of mine for the better part of the last 20 years to compile as much information about success and how it is achieved as I possibly could. That research has become the backbone of a book that I am currently in the process of writing.
I am going to let one of the big secrets of success out though, right here in this little ol’ blog!
There are more than a few commonalities among the people I have had the pleasure of meeting and who have also achieved great things in their lives, but there is one that I think is really underrated. It’s also under appreciated, and quite frankly, under used.
It’s one that sounds really simple. In fact you’ve heard it so many times that in spite of my best efforts to build to a climactic revelation here, you are not going to be overwhelmed.
Here it is: They don’t quit!
You can call it perseverance if you like or persistence, but the point is that when anyone who is serious about achieving something worthy decides to stick to it no mater what happens, they will absolutely succeed. It may not come about immediately, but they will accomplish what they set out to if they just don’t quit. Guaranteed.
The two reasons that 99.9% of people fail to accomplish greatness, fall short of their goals, never experience their dreams or don’t end up living a passionate and fulfilling life are these: They either don’t try…or they quit.
Failure is just a road sign that leads to success for these people. Being told they are crazy is like music to their ears. Going it alone and bucking the odds is like betting on a game that you have already seen. It’s that solid as a formula!
Here’s what makes this so powerful. And this will apply to you or me or anyone else on the planet; You are never beat until you surrender. You are only held back by the limitations that you choose to accept. And you have never failed until you quit.
“Defeat is a state of mind. No one is ever defeated until defeat has been accepted as reality. To me, defeat in anything is merely temporary, and it’s punishment is but an urge for me to greater effort to achieve my goal. Defeat simply tells me that something is wrong in my doing; it is a path leading to success and truth” – Bruce Lee
Isn’t that quote fantastic? It has to be one of my all time favorites. Defeat is really only part of your reality if you decide to accept it. It’s all up to you!
Otherwise it is merely a guide leading you to a better outcome and toward true success. If you can master that concept, you will be well on your way to achieving greatness.
Here’s another one of my favorites. It’s a little poem that I caught up with the other day for the first time in many years. It’s simple and to the point. It doesn’t use unfamiliar language and it certainly won’t make the whole idea of not quitting sound any sexier. But, maybe if you read it with a new perspective, it will sound a little more profound. Check it out and let me know what you think.
When things go wrong as they sometimes will, When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high, And you want to smile but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit, Rest, if you must, but don’t you quit.
Life is queer with it’s twists and turns, As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about, When he might have won had he stuck it out,
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow, You may succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than, It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up, When he might have captured the victor’s cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down, How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out, The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit, It’s when things seem worse that you must not quit.
