What a Character!

What a Character!

The dictionary defines a person's character as "the aggregate of features and traits that form the individual nature of some person or thing". You may have hears this little diddy somewhere along the way as well; "Sow a thought and you reap an act; sow an act and you reap a habit; sow a habit and you reap a character; sow a character and you reap a destiny" Charles Reade is credited with that saying, and I think it's a very good one and full of truth.  It really outlines for us the things that we need to be mindful of, as it pertains to [...]

Good Fortune

Good Fortune

I had lunch with my wife today at this cozy little Chinese restaurant that we like.  It was really peaceful in there today...very quiet...and the food was fantastic, like always. So at the end of the meal we like to open our fortune cookies and read them out loud, imagining that the message inside is something that will play out for us in some meaningful way that day.  It's our thing...kinda silly...but it makes the whole process more fun. Hers said, "Happiness is trying to find you.  Look around". Mine said, "The biggest mistake a [...]

See What You Get?

See What You Get?

You have no doubt heard the phrase, "what you see is what you get".  You may have even used it before.  If you have, you were probably describing a scenario where someone was physically observing something, thinking that there might be more to it, but alas, they were seeing everything there was to see. If you're a little older, you may remember The Flip Wilson Show, where comedian Flip Wilson would dress up like a woman to play the role of Geraldine.  He would always say "what you see is what you get" as he attempted to explain away the [...]

Permanent Vacation

Permanent Vacation

PVTS is something you probably haven't heard of.  I'm saying that because I actually made it up.  I consider it to be a very serious condition that seems to affect nearly every adult American every single year.  It often has no symptoms and can begin to consume seemingly happy and healthy people as quickly as any disease in the history of the world. Characteristics of this horrible ailment include a lack of energy and motivation, half-heartedness in every endeavor, boredom, non-production, a yearning for the recent past, and an [...]

Baseball Moments

Baseball Moments

This morning was pretty cool.  I mean aside from the temperature.  And yes, it still gets a little nippy in the A.M., even out here in the desert. It was cool because I got to watch my son and a bunch of other kids play baseball. It occurred to me as I was watching, that when I am real still and in the moment, life just has this sort of magic feel to it.  It was almost as if I could feel what the players were feeling as they stepped up to the plate, took a few practice hacks, and then got ready to hit against one of their buddies.  [...]

Kid Stuff

Kid Stuff

My kids really inspire me. I listen to them, and watch them, and just think that it is such a wonderful life for those who can live in a world of endless possibilities.  No limits. Now right away I can hear you thinking, "Sure Mike, it's a great life to be a kid.  No responsibility, no job, no family to take care of, no bills to pay, no stress, of course they are happy all the time!"  And I would say, well, you've got a point...but I would also ask you to consider how truly happy they are.  And consider how much happiness they [...]
