Here’s a really simple thing you can do that will make your day a lot more fun. It involves performing a simple act that requires minimal effort, and which will cause you and all the people who are part of your world for the day feel really good, if only for a few minutes.
Sounds pretty cool, right? So if you’re ready to give it a shot, here it is…
Smile at everyone you come in contact with.
Whether it’s a co-worker you pass in the hallway, a stranger who happens to be in your aisle at the grocery store, or a neighbor walking down the sidewalk, when you see them, and they see you, smile. Give them that universal sign of upward turned mouth that translates into any and every language.
More than likely, in fact I would venture to say in about 99% of the interactions, the other person will smile back at you. And as corny as this sounds, it’s actually going to make both of you feel really good. You’re welcome to add a friendly greeting to the encounter, too. “Hey there” or “How’s your day going?” are usually pretty good ones. Of course the less generic and more relevant to the circumstances, the better. For example, if you’re in the elevator at the beginning of the day you might ask if they have a busy morning ahead, whereas at the gas station, you might ask how they like their car. I think you’re probably picking up what I’m throwing down right now. Just use your good judgement.
The smiles are the big challenge for you today, so if the witty quip or ice breaker seems to add too much pressure, don’t sweat it. Just flash your little blast of friendliness and pay attention to how everyone reacts.
If you want to make it even more fun, start counting how many smiles you happen to get back during the day. Become a collector.
I think you’re going to be amazed at how awesome you feel by the end of the day. And if I’m right…then do it again tomorrow. And as often as you want to spread the love and male your world a better place.
