The quality of your thoughts will determine the quality of your life.
Sounds reasonable enough, right?
So what are your predominant thoughts? And how’s the quality?
I guess the best way any of us can answer that question is by looking around and assessing the quality of our lives. The place we find ourselves in physically, emotionally, spiritually, and financially. Where do you live? Is it where you want to live? How much jack do you have sitting in the ol’ bank account? Is it as much as you want? How’s your health? Could you drop and give us 20 push ups right now? How’s your spiritual connection? Empty or full?
If you just ran yourself through that quick unofficial Quality of Life Test…you have a pretty clear picture of what the quality of your thoughts have been in the recent past…or maybe for your whole life up to this point.
If you want to improve the quality of your life, and if you want to change anything about your life, for the better…you need to change your thoughts and you need to adjust the quality of your though patterns.
Again, it sounds reasonable enough…but how does it happen?
First, you have to be committed to do a few things and to stick with them. Yes, this is going to require effort. If you don’t know this yet, I will let you in on one of the great mysteries of our Universe…you reap what you sow. You get out of life exactly what you put into it. So if you’re not willing to do a few things which will change your habitual thought patterns, then you can stop reading this post and go back to searching online for the next $97 CD set that is going to ‘transform your life in the next 14 days without having to move from your living room couch’. And let me know how that works out for you…
So what do you have to do? Well, I can think of one thing that you can start working on immediately which will make a significant difference for you and I think you’ll start to feel a whole lot better, too.
Get into LOVE.
Okay, no one who knows me would ever describe me as a “love child”, but most who know me would tell you that I am totally down with the whole LOVE thing.
The greatest teacher of all time, in my opinion, was Jesus Christ. And Jesus had a pretty clear message when it came to love. He said love God, love yourself, love your neighbor as yourself, and love your enemies. That pretty much covers it, right? So how does that work?
You may call the Higher Source in your life God, the Universe, Source Energy, your Higher Self, or something else. Whatever that Source is, love it with all of your heart. Trust and know that you are more than provided for, and that your Higher Source wants your life to be abundant in all areas. Know that you are filled with this Source and live your life in a spirit of thankfulness for this amazing truth.
Love yourself. Have the confidence to trust yourself, and know that you were created in the image of the Creator, and that you are perfect and exist to become the greatest version of you that could ever live. Embrace who you are, and never, ever imitate. Like Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “insist on yourself”. And like I said, love yourself!
Love your neighbor as you do yourself. I don’t believe that this should just extend to the people who live in the houses or apartments closest to you…I think it’s implying pretty much everyone who you come into contact with or interact with in any capacity. Just love people!
Then comes the tough one…love your enemies.
I think this last one is where we can start to evaluate a big part of the quality of thought ideal which is a sticking point for a whole lot of folks.
Loving your enemy is a pretty tough thing to do. You have people and situations in your life that you simply don’t like. And probably even some that you hate. And while it seems somewhat sensible to feel hate toward something or someone who doesn’t serve you or your highest good…consider the quality of that type of thinking.
Aren’t you just partaking in hatred and anger when you go down that road?
Seriously, when you harbor bitterness, resentment, envy, distaste, or jealousy, who is it that you are really hurting? Who are you inflicting the most damage on? Who is paying the price for your hate?
The answer is YOU.
You are having a serious and detrimental effect on your own quality of life by allowing yourself to indulge in thoughts of discord. Hate kills. And it kills from within. It kills creativity, it kills vitality, and it kills dreams.
How about LOVE, instead?
“But you don’t understand what this person did to me, Mike!” or “you don’t know what they are REALLY like”…no, I don’t. But I do know that thoughts which originate and are based in hate or disharmony are destructive to you and to the life that you are living right now.
You can’t change the individuals who may have hurt you. You can’t change the circumstances which have played out because of these people. You CAN, however, change your own thoughts. You CAN change your mind. You CAN take control over your ideals. And that’s exactly what I am suggesting that you should do.
Take 5-10 minutes each day to get quiet, and listen to your thoughts. See how many of them feel negative or are based in discord. See how may things you can sense yourself hating. Even if they are what you consider bad things.
Then, over the course of the next few weeks, start to think about ways to change those thoughts to positive ones. Focus on your ability to control what runs through your mind and begin to shape your thoughts, the way you know they should be.
For example, if you feel yourself hating something like fighting with someone. Start thinking about how much you love peace, and imagine harmony with that individual. Focus your energy there. Take the positive route; the high road, if you will. And see how much better it feels to operate from that perspective. (You will also start to manifest more opportunities for peace than you will for conflict).
This will take practice. And so, it first takes a willingness to commit, then a desire to improve, and finally a spirit of persistence. Stick with it. It’s an exercise that will benefit you and your life, just as much as pumping iron every day will increase your muscle mass. Take it that seriously!
