Optimize Your World

One of my favorite quotes of all time comes from Anne Frank.  She said, “In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart”.

Considering what she went through in her life, it is a remarkable statement to say the least.  It speaks to the resiliency of the human spirit, and the unquenchable optimism that can take hold of a person, which is more powerful than just about anything else in the entire world.

It is also probably one of my favorites because my wife and I were both in the play, The Diary of Anne Frank, when we were in high school.  My wife, who at the time was my girlfriend, had the lead role of Anne.  (For the record, I played Otto Frank. Yes, her father)  I have often had to remind her of her final words in the play, in those moments when the good in me isn’t exactly shining through… it usually works…

But the main reason that I like the quote is because I happen to believe that it’s true.  I don’t necessarily think that every person in the world today has a good heart.  But I do think that if everyone were to return to their essence…the actual starting place…maybe like they were as an innocent child, there would be a lot more goodness in the world.

Optimism is such a wonderful force.  It puts you in direct contact with faith and the power of your inner self and it creates a belief that says not only is anything possible, but anything, that good thing, is likely!  It forces you to become inspired, and as you embrace optimism, it will embrace you.

The sooner that you can start believing in the good and the positive, the sooner you will start to see all of those things that make life truly good and truly positive.

The dictionary defines Optimism like this:

1. a disposition or tendency to look an the more favorable side of events or conditions and to expect the most favorable outcome

2. the belief that good ultimately predominates over evil in the world

3.  the belief that goodness pervades reality

4. the doctrine that the existing world is the best of all possibilities

If we break down those four distinct interpretations of optimism, it is really pretty interesting.  Read them again carefully.  to me it suggests that optimism is a belief system that is something other than the rest of the world’s reality.  In other words, without this belief system, the world is something other than good, and something other than the best of all possibilities.  Wow.

The extremely encouraging part of looking deeper at the definition is that it also seems to suggest that you can transcend the rest of the belief systems, and by doing so, you will find the positive in all things.  It sounds like the good things are there, we just have to have the mindset or disposition to see them.

It all depends on your perspective and your beliefs.  Perception IS reality!

Here’s another dandy:

“Loving people live in a loving world.  Hostile people live in a hostile world. Same world.” – Wayne Dyer

There is a lot of crazy stuff going on in all of our worlds right now.  Many people are without their homes, their jobs, their security.  So many seem to exist in a place with no love or joy.  Some are hungry and in need of those basic essentials that the rest of us may take for granted.  It’s tough out there.

Each of us, in our own way, and maybe in just a small way, can start to make a difference.  And I think a big part of it will be the degree to which we embrace optimism.  We have to truly BELIEVE that things are better than they seem to be.  That our friends who are in need will have those needs met.  That the happiness is there for everyone, we all just have to grab hold of it and not let go.

Think about how good things really are, and then think about what you can do to make it even better.

The world is truly what you see it as, and in spite of everything, I for one still believe that the best is yet to come!

  1. Yes Mike! Great blog. I totally believe that our outlook on life determines our experiences. If we truly believe that there is goodness in the world, we will see more goodness, and attract the same too.

  2. I read the book as a teenager and remember the quote. But I was pretty focused on the horror of the circumstances. It would be interesting to read it again with more mature eyes.

When I see the relief effort going to Haiti, I’m reminded that folks really are basically good want to help.

They look for reasons to serve and circumstances always presents themselves. And of course, you don’t have to look very far, if you’re watching for the opportunity.

Laureen – thanks so much for the comment. Life is definitely subjective reality! We can see it however we choose.

Kathy – I appreciate you reading! Yes, the story of Anne Frank is a horrible one in many ways. And that makes her attitude that much more astounding, and in a very real way…encouraging.

    All the best
