Lose the Jacket!

Comfort zones are sort of like straitjackets for the soul.

I just made that one up.  But if you think about it, it’s true…

There’s nothing more confining and limiting than remaining in the same spot in life, doing the same things, and being the same person, over and over and over.  And all because it’s comfortable.

The classic definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result, right?  And of course, the classic fashion statement for the insane person is the straitjacket.  At least for the insane person that might otherwise do damage to themselves.  Do you see the correlation?

Another way to look at it is like this; if you’re not pushing yourself and seeing how far you can go, you’re basically just trapped in a box.  And it’s a big world out there.  Living in a box your whole life would be a major disappointment.

If any of us ever want to get to the next level in life, and start achieving success in a more meaningful way, we first must be willing to abandon all of the habits that have brought us to the point we find ourselves at currently.  We have to walk away from the comfortable.  We have to risk failing greatly and venture into the great unknown.

It only makes sense.  How else would you ever get to a place you’ve never been?

You’ve seriously got to lose the jacket!

Living with passion and purpose is all about the willingness to become extraordinary.  Ordinary just won’t get it done.

I found this short and sweet poem that isn’t attributed to anyone, but that I thought was pretty cool.  See if it speaks to you about pushing the envelope a little…or a lot…and making a decision to go after the life you want and know you can have.

My Comfort Zone

I used to have a comfort zone,

Where I knew I wouldn’t fail.

The same four walls and busy work,

Were really more like jail.

I longed so much to do the things I’d never done before,

But stayed inside my comfort zone and paced the same old floor.

I said it didn’t matter that I wasn’t doing much,

I said I didn’t care for things like commission checks and such.

I claimed to be so busy with the things inside the zone,

But deep inside I longed for something special of my own.

I couldn’t let my life go by just watching others win,

I held my breath; I stepped outside and let the change begin.

I took a step and with new strength I’d never had before,

I kissed my comfort zone goodbye and closed and locked the door.

If you’re in a comfort zone,

Afraid to venture out,

Remember that all winners were at one time filled with doubt.

A step or two and words of praise can make your dreams come true,

Reach for your future with a smile; success is there for you.
