Let’s Die, Living

Let’s Die, Living

I was sitting around the other day thinking about death. Now, before you start imagining that I've lost whatever part of my mind is left, and that I may be heading for a real dark place in this post, let me explain. I found myself with an opportunity to lose myself in some quality quiet time earlier this week, and so I decided to dive in.  Somehow, I was drawn to start thinking about life.  The whole cycle;  the experiences we all have, the things we all learn (or don't), the places we go, and eventually, I started thinking about our [...]

The Optimist Frowned

The Optimist Frowned

I was reading something the other day and some dude was writing about how the people who talk about positive thinking are all full of it because nobody can be positive all the time.  I guess if he has come across people who think you have to be positive all the time in order to be positive...he makes a good point. But, I thought his statements were a little off because not everyone who believes in the power of positive thinks you have to be positive all the time, every single minute in order to be a positive person. If you read my [...]

Just Add E

Just Add E

Just add water. Are there three sweeter words in a "how to prepare" list anywhere on the planet?   I don't think so.  It's like magic! All you do is take the powdery stuff in the pouch, pour it into a bowl, and just add water.  You're home free. In this sense, water becomes even more amazing than you already thought it was.  It becomes the Super Ingredient that makes all of the other ingredients contained in their various cans, bags, and boxes come to life. What if I told you there a was a Super Ingredient for your life [...]

Feeling Lucky?

Feeling Lucky?

Have you stopped to consider how lucky you are? Now look, "luck" can be defined a few different ways, and because of that, it's usually a pretty subjective term.  Typically, I like to say that luck is that thing that happens when preparation meets opportunity...but I also reference it quite often by saying that I am lucky and blessed in many ways.  When I say it like that, I think of  it more in terms of good fortune, and that thing that makes me feel grateful. For the purposes of this post making any sense, let's talk about [...]

Think It Through

Think It Through

There is a poem that I have kept with me since I was a kid.  It has been a source of inspiration for years and I really wanted to share it with you tonight. When I mean that I've kept it, I mean that it has either been up on my office wall, or tucked in a notebook in my room, and it seems that I've always been able to access it when I have needed to for the last 30-some-odd years.  Of course, this is not hard now that we have the internet, and I'm pretty sure that I found the latest and greatest version that I have online. In any [...]

Believe You Me

Believe You Me

Belief in yourself and belief in your own ability to be, do, or have whatever you desire, is ultimately what will get you to that point. Have you ever listened to the people who have accomplished amazing things in this life?  I mean really listened to them? Whether it's an athlete who wins an award or championship trophy, a movie star who accepts an Oscar, or the kid who takes 1st place in the 8th grade science fair,  they all sound a lot alike when describing their monumental achievements. They say things like, "No one thought I [...]

Maybe Christmas…perhaps…means a little bit more

Maybe Christmas…perhaps…means a little bit more

I came across a great quote the other day that was attributed to Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President of the United States.  I liked it so much that I posted it on Facebook (the sincerest form of flattery in our continuously-expanding social media world), and a whole bunch of folks indicated they loved it, too. Coolidge said, "Christmas is not a time nor season, but a state of mind.  To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas". The quote really got my attention because I've heard so [...]

The Thrill of Victory

The Thrill of Victory

Here's what I think... If people were as passionate about their lives and their own success as they are their favorite sports teams, we could not only change the world, but we could transform it into something totally amazing. Passion is a very powerful thing. Now, I'll confess something to you; I'm an absolute sports fanatic.  I love sports.  I love football, basketball, baseball, and hockey.  College and pro.  I love mixed martial arts, boxing, and even tennis.  I enjoy watching my favorite teams or players in action, live or [...]

Counter Punch

Counter Punch

You know, I got to thinking after yesterday's post... Another thing that a good punch in the face or a blast of adversity will do to you is WAKE YOU UP! Oh, if you didn't read the last post, you probably didn't get the whole punch in the face thing.  Sorry about that.  If you would like to read it, it's called New Plan and in it, I referenced mixed martial artist Mirko Cro Cop's quote, "Everybody's got a plan, until they get hit". I love the quote, not just because it's great smack talk, but because it applies to our lives so [...]

New Plan

New Plan

One of my favorite quotes from the last few years comes from the wonderful world of sports.  More specifically, the wonderful world of mixed martial arts. I like the quote because it applies to life just as succinctly as it applies to fighting in the UFC. The quote is from Mirko Cro Cop, and he said it before one of his fights about a year or so ago.  It was played on TV during one of those well edited segments that show both fighters trash-talking about each other before the fight is broadcast.  Cro Cop was responding to one of his [...]

How’s Your ‘Tude?

How’s Your ‘Tude?

You've heard "attitude is everything", right?  Well, consider this twist, which is equally true:  Everything is attitude. This past weekend I was with my family at Universal Studios in Hollywood and we had an absolute blast!  As you might imagine, we pretty much have a blast no matter what we're doing.  And I guess that's sort of the point I'm trying to make.  Everything we do in my family has a whole lot to do with our 'tudes! Your life can be incredibly fun, depending on what kind of attitude you bring to it. In fact, two [...]

Good Choices

Good Choices

I love to remind people that the best part about a bad day is that they don't have to have one.  Sounds a little nuts, I know...but hear me out. Good days or  bad days are both the result of the choices that we make about them, before they ever start.  You and I are the masters of our own attitudes. We can make the conscious decision to have a good day, and we can do it each and every day if we want to.  And as such, we really don't have to experience a bad day unless that is something we decide you want to experience.  Okay, it's [...]

Your Great Life

Your Great Life

Somewhere in the middle of the family's Wii bowling tournament the other night, I found myself overwhelmed with thankfulness.  Maybe it was when I rolled two strikes in the 10th frame assuring me of a win in game one.  (They all took turns beating me after that).  Well, actually in that moment I felt relief...the thankful part came when I paused to really soak up all of the things that were going on around me. It's always a good time around the kids when everyone is laughing and having fun.  It has a way of allowing me to let go of [...]

Extraordinary Self Control

Extraordinary Self Control

Let me take a shot at empowering you. One of the worst feelings in life is the feeling that you have no control over it. Maybe that's how you feel sometimes.  If you do, you're not alone.  For many people, events and circumstances dictate their mood, attitude, and action (or inaction), and they truly glide through life like a kite tossed around by the wind.  Literally living each day at the mercy of the world around them. They don't have to.  And, if you feel like that, neither do you. I like to say that just about anyone can [...]
